In house laboratory facility
We are proud to be able to offer a 24/7 laboratory
service open to our clients, vets and trainers. Having the facility in
house means that there is no waiting for results. With the correct
diagnosis the animal can be treated immediately. We offer a collection
service with same day results for regular clients.
There is an enormous list with all the different
tests we carry out. Below some information on our most used profiles
Information of the most common tests
Large
Equine Health Profile
- This is the most
comprehensive profile we offer. It covers a lot of different fields.
The biochemistry in this panel will look at the vital organs like
liver, kidney, intestine and muscles. Next to that the panel will
cover more biochemistry and the total protein level.
- Electrolytes
(Na+, K+, Cl-) The balance of these electrolytes is vital to your
horse's health. Abnormal levels can be life threatening. Electrolytes
tests are important in the evaluating diarrhoea, dehydration and
cardiac (heart) problems.
- Blood cell counts
The panel will include a full count of the red and white blood cells
(5 part). We make use of the newest technology, resulting in the most
reliable results. The red blood cell count will give information about
the amount and quality of the red blood cells. This is important in
relation to anaemia, dehydration, and oxygen levels. The total white
cell counts and individual cell counts can indicate stress, leukaemia,
inflammation or an inability to fight infection. Low platelet numbers
can indicate a bleeding problem.
This
panel is very useful in the search for the reason of a suspected health
problem of your horse.
General
Equine or small animal Health Profile
In case
of a general health screening this profile will often be sufficient. As the
large profile it will include biochemistry, blood cell counts and
fibrinogen.
Equine
Wellness Screening
In this
profile we look more at the general state of the animal and less at
specific diseases. The profile is designed for a more routine test of your
horse. Just to check if there is anything going on.
Equine
Fitness / Race Profile
This
profile is used to evaluate the fitness level and to detect infections that
may influence the race performance. Fibrinogen is tested separately to get
a more reliable result. This will enable us to detect this first indicator
of infections in an (very) early stage.
Urine
Samples
Urine can
give a lot of information on the state of health of your horse. Samples are
easy to collect by using a plastic cup on a stick.
Pre
anaesthetic testing
|
We pride ourselves on
the level of care and safety we are able to provide for our patients,
especially when general anaesthetics are necessary. However, there is a risk with any general anaesthetic
procedure,
and one of the services we offer to help minimise this risk is
pre-anaesthetic blood testing.
|
|
|
Although a thorough
physical examination is conducted on every patient before they have any form
of anaesthesia or sedation, internal organ problems may not be detectable
through this procedure. Thus, we recommend a pre-anaesthetic profile for
all sick, debilitated or aging animals which require an anaesthetic. We
also perform the tests at the owner's request for younger animals
undergoing anaesthesia.
|
|
The pre-anaesthetic
blood test involves obtaining a small amount of the patient's blood. For
anaesthetics, we are particularly concerned with kidney and liver
capabilities, in addition to red blood cell and electrolyte
concentrations.
